Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to study water and its importance in the Egyptian civilisation. Many aspects will be examined: from the essential role of the Nile to the water used in the daily life without forgetting its primordial role in the religion.

The course provides the students with a detailed knowledge of one aspect of the culture of ancient Egypt, with a focus on archaeology, built environment, material culture and art.
The aims of the course are to:
- provide students with the opportunity to study at an advanced level a substantive subject in the field of Egyptology.
- prepare students for research in the archaeology and culture of ancient Egypt.
- to give students training in a range of general skills, such as writing, presentation and data analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

NEW (Changes due to Covid19):
Assessment will be based on the following criteria:
- Oral presentation online (via BigBlueButton) (30%)
- Essay (Word or Pdf format, sent by e-mail) (30%)
- Attendance, draft of the presentation and active participation to class discussion (draft sent by email, attendance online via BigBlueButton) (15%)
- Test on the course content (probably via Moodle - further information will be posted soon)(25%)

Assessment will be based on the following criteria:

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the maximum number of points is required for a positive assessment.

Regular and active participation is expected as an inherent part of the assessment. A maximum of one absence is tolerated and must be justified in advance, i.e. before the missed lesson, to the lecturer by e-mail.

Minimum requirement NEW
REQUIREMENT: Preparation of subjects according to scientific criteria using specialized literature and sources, as far as possible in the given circumstances (prohibition to enter university buildings). Knowledge of scientific work in the field of Egyptology is fundamental. AN INDEPENDENT SEARCH OF VIRTUAL LITERATURE IS NECESSARY FOR THE TREATMENT OF SUBJECTS. This includes both sources that can be captured/evaluated electronically but also inaccessible titles.

Examination topics

Written test at the end of the semester on the entire course content.
