Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This excursion offers archaeology students the unique opportunity to get to know the prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps. On the first day, we will explore the Natural History Museum Vienna and the Pile Dwellings Curatorship, where we will gain an in-depth insight into the research and conservation of these unique archaeological sites. On the second day of the excursion, we will travel to Mondsee in Upper Austria, where we will visit the Mondsee Museum and learn about the fascinating history of the Mondsee culture. A special highlight of this excursion is the opportunity to go snorkelling at the Station See site in Mondsee, where the origins of the Mondsee culture can be experienced directly. This not only offers students the chance to see the archaeological remains underwater, but also to gain practical experience in underwater archaeology. The excursion will take place in November 2024. The costs include admission to the museums and snorkelling equipment at Lake Mondsee. Students are responsible for organising their own travel to and from the site, although it is possible to travel by train or by car. The aim of these excursions is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of prehistoric pile dwellings and the methods of their exploration. This will not only enrich academic knowledge, but also promote practical skills in fieldwork and in the specialised discipline of underwater archaeology.

Assessment and permitted materials

In addition to participating in the field trip, students will be asked to prepare short oral presentations that they will give as papers. These presentations will focus on specific aspects of the sites we will visit or on relevant topics of geoarchaeological prospection. This is an excellent opportunity for you to dive deeper into a specific topic and share your findings and analyses with the course participants. Presentations should last approximately 5 minutes and you should be prepared to answer questions from the group. Please note that your presentations are part of the course assessment and will help determine your final grade. The exact topics for the presentations will be announced and distributed in the pre-meeting.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The evaluation of the students in this field trip will be based on different criteria that take into account both the process of preparation for the field trip and active participation in it. Here are the main criteria by which the students' work will be evaluated:

1. Quality of presentations: Students will be evaluated based on the quality of their prepared presentations. This includes thorough research and understanding of the chosen topic, the ability to present the information clearly and effectively, and the ability to answer questions and stimulate discussion.

2. Active participation in discussions: Students* are encouraged to actively participate in discussions that arise during the field trip. This may include asking questions, offering observations or sharing insights.

3. Professionalism and respect: Students will also be assessed on their professionalism and respect towards the historical sites, and towards their fellow students and the course leader.

These criteria ensure that students not only participate in the field trip, but are actively engaged in it, which promotes deeper learning and understanding. This field trip is a learning experience and students will be encouraged to take the opportunity to learn and discover as much as possible.
