Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict, as it was constructed in Israelis movies. After a general presentation of the conflict's historical roots, the course will introduce to the students Israeli films that dealt with the subject from the 1960s until today. Throughout the decades, there emerged cinematic genres that dealt with different aspects of the conflict, along constant innovation reacting to the changing course of events. (Includes the screening of six movies)

Assessment and permitted materials

Course requirements:
1) Performance in class (30%)
2) Quiz on historical facts (30%)
3) Short paper (4-5 pages) on one movie or related topic (40%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at a differentiated understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict, or rather the reflection thereof in Israeli society. This aim will be achieved, first of all, by a general presentation of the conflict’s historical roots; the historical presentation will be complemented by an analysis of the evolving narratives in Israeli movies from 1967-2007. The cross-reference between historical events and their representation in the cinematic genre allows for a more sophisticated analysis of the conflict and its discourse within Israeli society.
