Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Mastering of the principles of archaeological stratigraphy.
Content: 1. General Introduction into the theory of stratigraphy: Stratification, laws of stratigraphy, stratigraphic sequence, concept of stratigraphy in archaeology, units of stratification
2. Stratigraphic excavation: strategies and processes of excavation, documentation of stratigraphic excavations, compilation of a stratigraphic sequence (Harris Matrix), correlation of SUs, periodisation
3. Analysis: Analysis of excavations, non-historic aspects of finds, dating of finds and stratigraphic units, finds and the stratigraphic sequence
Methods: Lecture, discussion and practice

Assessment and permitted materials

Written test. Compilation of a stratigraphic sequence by means of the documentation of an excavation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

No minimum requirements / evaluation of the capability to compile a stratigraphic sequence and to answer questions concerning stratigraphic theory and practice
