Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Universities of Kiel (Germany), Ghent (Belgium) and Vienna (Austria) are offering an Erasmus+ international Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) in form of a combined hands-on field and online course on Geoarchaeological Prospection of North Frisian medieval settlement patterns using geophysical methods.
The investigated sites are located in a clay and peat district, which was colonized in several waves, transforming the natural landscape in different ways. Settlers of the Roman Iron Age as well as the Early Middle Ages favored elevated river embankments and formed large village terps. In the High Medieval Period, new settlers claimed the large peat bog areas. Starting from straight chains of small farm terps, they transformed the landscape significantly. In this course, we aim to investigate both an early village terp and a younger chain of small terps. The prospections will look into the different settlement layouts and the way the settlers took possession of the landscape.
The field-course will be held from August 28th to September 3rd 2022 in the marsh landscape of the German North Sea coast near the small town of Tönning in Schleswig-Holstein.
The course comprises an introduction to the specific local archaeological situation and landscape development, archaeological research questions, and practicing ways to solving them through geophysical measurements. In the field course, state-of-the-art instrumentation including magnetics, electromagnetics, geoelectrics, ground penetrating radar, seismics and geophysical downhole measurements will be applied. The field component will be complemented by a compulsory online component during fall 2022 dedicated to data processing, analysis, and interpretation.
Successful course participation will be rewarded with 3 ECTS credit points.
The course is directed towards BSc, MSc and PhD students of geophysics, geosciences, and archaeology with a basic knowledge of geophysical prospection methods. The number of participants is restricted to 20.
Travel and accommodation are organized by the respective universities. Travel costs will be covered up to 70 EUR per day through ERASMUS+ funding. Fundig is subject to successful participation in both the field course as well as the virtual online course.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will work in groups for fieldwork, data processing and analysis. The student groups will have to prepare posters, presenting the outcome of their work. These posters will be evaluated by the lecturers. The posters shall be presented at the International Conference on Archaeological Prospection to be held at Kiel 28/3/2023-1/4/2023.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in both online and practical parts are required for successful completion of the course, as well as for obtaining funding. Failing to participate in both practical and online course parts will require students to return any obtained funding.
