Aims, contents and method of the course

. The focus lies not so much on the historical development, but on practical aspects ("How did it work?" "How did they do it?") as well as the cultural and historical background.
The main topics are:
Sources and the scientific foundation of ancient technology
Measuring the time and surveying techniques
Tunneling
Construction: Materials, masonry construction, scaffolding, retaining walls for building in water, arches and vaults (statics),cranes and lifting machines
Roads and bridges
Hydro engineering: Dams, water wheels and water lifting, qanats, aqueducts from the source to the user of the water
Mining and beneficiation
Smelting and raffination
Alloys
The various topics will be presented on the basis of examples from literary, epigraphic, iconographic and archaeological sources as well as still existing monuments and archaeological features. In addition emphasis will be placed on the various ways the people of classical antiquity used to solve technical problems.
