Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces students to key theories and methodologies of visual culture in archaeology and related disciplines (art history, Bildwissenschaft, anthropology). This includes the discussion of the terms art, image and ornament, and approaches such as iconography, semiotics, agency, Bildakt, visual culture studies, architecture and aesthetics. Weekly readings and discussions and oral presentations of archaeological case studies will enable the students to engage with significant concepts in the study of visual culture and their application in archaeology.
