Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Israeli Society is perceived as a young, dynamic and modern. Create by young and revolutionary pioneers, men and women; with a socialist-Zionist dedication to the ideal of class and gender equality.
" So how come these women were marginalized again, finding themselves in the communal kitchen and laundry or other occupations considered secondary in the hierarchy of pioneering values?
" Why are women as subjects and agents of change missing from historical accounts on Israel and Zionism?
" What are the reasons for the gender asymmetries in Israeli society? (Asymmetries between men and women; between Ashkenazi, Mizrahi; Jewish and Palestinian women).
" What role did Jewish religion play in creating the disparity?
" Has the interdependence of Zionism and Masculinity pushed women and feminism to the periphery?
" How do topics such as the Israeli-Arab conflict, or militarism and security, influence the process of creating gender hierarchy?

We will de-construct and reconstruct the nationalist mythology, look at the variety of social aspects of the society in order to grasp the picture of the women condition in society. We will analyze cultural representations of women, looking for example into literary and cinematographic canons.
