Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim is to gain knowledge about selected topics of importance for the ancient Egyptian culture, to understand cultural phenomena in the relevant historical setting and context.
Contents: Single topics and phenomena of importance for the development of the ancient Egyptian culture will be explained and demonstrated by using archaeological and other historical source materials. The foreseen topics will deal with Egyptian art, development of the state, Egyptian society, administration, kingship, funerary architecture temples, town development, chronology and religion.
Method: lectures. The detailed program will be presented at the beginning of the term (accessible via moodle). Additional ressources will be available via moodle.
The course is planned as teaching in classroom. In case of difficulties for the room capacity, caused by a high number of participants,we plan to give the course as a Hybrid class (split in groups in weekly rotation of presence or synchron-digital class via webinar-tools). In case of a new lock-down the course is given in entirely digital classes (webinar-tool).

Assessment and permitted materials

Important Notice: The plan is to hold a written exam, presence modus, 120 Minutes. Given the current circumstances and future Covid-development, the modalities might change to a digital written or to a digital oral exam. Changes in examination modalities caused by Covid-19 will be announced separately.

Lecture exam for students of the extension curriculum/EC: planned: written exam, 2 hours (see note above).
STEOP for students of Egyptology: the course is part of the written modul-exam (2 hours) of STEOP Modul C, consisting of two courses (STEOP 1: Introduction into Ancient Egypt: Overview and STEOP 2: Introduction into Ancient Egypt: Themes in focus).
