Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture & exercise is intended to provide a concise overview of the development of the architecture of the temple district of Karnak. Stages of development of the extensive complex and the surrounding architecture are presented, building constructions, function and building materials are included, as well as decoration programmes that contribute to the functional analysis. Contributions from current scientific research and specialist discussions on individual issues will be included. The content is conveyed both through lectures by the course instructor and through the students' own development of reading texts and the resulting questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

This is an immanent course. This means that regular attendance is compulsory. Attendance and grading are governed by the study regulations of the University of Vienna, and in particular by the regulations on "Examination-immanent courses". Students may be absent once.
The grade is determined as follows: four written homework assignments on reading texts (max. 2 pages each), 40%; active participation in discussions also using reading texts (30%).
Preparation of an essay, presentation and written discussion (max. 10 pages, plus scientific appendix), 30%;

88-100 points = 1 (very good)
75-87.99 points = 2 (good)
62.51-74.99 points = 3 (satisfactory)
50-62.5 points = 4 (sufficient)
0-49.99 points = 5 (insufficient)
