Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Renaissance castle Hanfelden is situated at the valley head of the Pölztales at Unterzeiring in Styria. As part of revitalization building archaeological investigations and objects recoveries have to be made.
2-3 sites are to be investigated in the region of the Oberhüttensattel which gave hints to alpine crossing in medieval times. We will try to find evidences for dating the sites probably in the medieval or early modern times.
Participants should feel well in the mountains, you should like persevering hiking, and be able to move without problems in up to 2500 m height with luggage. Appropriate equipment (shoes, clothes, etc.) is required. We will stay partly in alpine huts.

During the excavation essential aspects of building archaeological investigations and object recoveries as well as survey methods and small excavations will be imparted on medieval and modern times sites. Another part will be the imparting of documentation methods.

Building Archaeology, object revovery, survey methods, excavation methods, measuring, archaeological documentation methods.
