Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This will be a 6 week 18-hour course that will provide an overview of Cuban history and its relations with the United States. The conceptual apparatus will be from the disciplines of History and International Relations Theory. The historical approach will be based on the use of historical documents as primary sources and the international relations perspective will be added by the use of the basic concepts of the discipline.
The course will be organized in two hour sessions one hour of lecture and one hour of class discussions based on pre assigned questions on one of the articles or book chapters that are listed in the bibliography

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral Assignments:
Students are expected to actively participate and execute one of the following tasks on schedule

1- Summary critique of one academic article on the topic
2- Discussion questions assigned the previous week.

Course Evaluation
A Final Seminar/ debate of the main issues in US Cuba relations

Attendance
Students must meet a minimum of 80% of class

Tardiness
Students are required to be in class on time. Arriving late disturbs the class as a whole. If a students do arrive late the instructor is required the student as absent

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The main objective is to provide the students with an overview Cuban History and of U.S.-Cuban relations from colonial times to the present, in order to offer the main elements toward the understanding the essence of one of the most long lasting conflict between two nations in the western hemisphere.
The course will also aim at providing the elements to understand the evolution of Cuba towards independence in the Latin American context.
This course will also encourage student participation in presenting and debating complex issues in a scholarly fashion.
