Sigismund von Herberstein (1486–1566), der sich im Dienste der Habsburger zweimal (1516/1517 und 1527) im Moskauer Reich aufhielt, publizierte seine Finalrelation erstmalig im Jahr 1549. Sein Buch machte ihn zum Entdecker Rußlands und regte in der Folge bis ins 18. Jahrhunderts mehrere Diplomaten, Reisende und auch Abenteurer zur Verschriftlichung ihrer Eindrücke an.

Aims, contents and method of the course

In der Lehrveranstaltung werden ausgehend von Herbersteins Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii ausgewählte Texte (Diplomaten, Söldner, Reisenden, Forschern) gelesen, verglichen und interpretiert sowie mit rezenten wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen (mittels Text- und Diskursanalyse) „konfrontiert”.
