The GM explores the early history of international cooperation during the 19th century in the sign of administrative unions as well as with the League and its organizations. The focus is on the League of Nations and its role in the economy, society, politics, the successor states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The class will discuss in an exemplary manner studies on governmental and non-governmental international cooperation during the second half of the 19th century and on the League of Nations and its organizations. The current scholarship in this field reflects the interest in the genealogy of European integration and results from the intense debate on globalization and its consequences.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The GM explores the early history of international cooperation during the 19th century in the sign of administrative unions as well as with the League and its organizations. The focus is on the League of Nations and its role in the economy, society, politics, the successor states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The class will discuss in an exemplary manner studies on governmental and non-governmental international cooperation during the second half of the 19th century and on the League of Nations and its organizations. The current scholarship in this field reflects the interest in the genealogy of European integration and results from the intense debate on globalization and its consequences.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The class will familiarize the participants with scholarship on four topics: 1. conceptual and methodological approaches to the analysis of international organizations; 2. internationalism of the 19th century as a first form of globalization; 3. restructuring the system of international cooperation under the auspices of the League of Nations and its agencies - special focus on the ILO; 4. concepts for European integration of the 1920s and 1930s

Examination topics
