Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Case studies on different forms of transnational activism of women in the course of the 20th century (suffrage movements around 1900, socialist, anarchist and pacifist networks, imperial and postcolonial feminism, transatlantic women's movements of the 1970s, transfeminism,...) serve as a starting point to explore the possibilities and limits of transnational history. Intersections with and distinctions to related approaches (global history, transfer history, entangled history...) will be discussed, as will the ambivalent relationship of transnational history to (implicit and explicit) national historical approaches. Research approaches that link women's and gender history with transnational perspectives will be in the foreground; however, parallel developments, differences and silences between gender history and transnational history will also be worked out and discussed on the basis of seminal historical texts. Using case studies, the main methodological challenges of transnational women's and gender history will be discussed and productive solutions (also for future projects) will be sought.
The course is characterised by joint and preparatory reading, short keynote presentations and intensive discussion of both theoretical questions and empirical research examples.
