Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Spa towns as "minor cities" have long been overshadowed by urban history research: too small, too idyllic, too insignificant or flickering in their significance because they are subject to the fashions and economic cycles of the time. Spa towns are a separate type of city with their own specific characteristics (e.g., a high proportion of service sector). Health resort cities have many facets: the history of medicine, the history of architecture, literature and music, social history, migration, knowledge transfer or the history of travel can be illustrated by this example. The contradiction of the spa city between rural idyll and urban modernity or between renunciation and abundance is also significant: Kneipp cures versus nocturnal social activity, drinking cures and diets versus excessive consumption of alcohol and/or sugar, rich industrialists and bitterly poor city dwellers met in this type of city. A "laboratory of bourgeois society" (Lotz-Heumann) emerged, but not only! Health resorts were also places of political debate, of emerging racism and xenophobia.
