Aims, contents and method of the course

This course examines what historiography means and will survey certain epochs of war and conquest in Europe:
Herodotus and the Persian Wars
Tactitus on Roman Britain
Giraldus Cambensis on the Norman Invasion of Ireland
The revolution in warfare and the Tudor reconquest of Ireland to 1600
Debates on the competence of British generals in World War1
AJP Taylor's "Origins of the Second World War" or E.H. Carr's "What is History?"

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular short written tasks, and final exam. Overall mark: oral participation, written tasks, final exam -10%, 40%, 50%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To understand how historiography developed and the debates it engendered, especially in relation to sources and their interpretation

Examination topics

6-7 introductory lectures and discussion
