Kaiser Franz Joseph und seine Zeit

4.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte
Continuous assessment of course work

The GR looks at the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. His reign was marked by cultural and scientific excellence as well as by major political transformations. After the suppression of the revolution, the monarchy was turned into a neo-absolutist state, where liberal ideas remained restricted to the economic field. Military losses and budgetary problems ended this form of government and paved the way for the parliamentary system, the 'Ausgleich' with Hungary and the beginning of the Dual Monarchy.

The reign of Emperor Franz Joseph has been intensively studied in recent years. I just want to point to the successful project "The Habsburg Monarchy 1848-1918" and to substantial contributions to neoabsolutism, parliamentarism and the nationality conflict, which were published more recently.

Within this GR, we will discuss a small selection of the wide range of important contributions to the reign of Francis Joseph. The mein focus will be on three field:
- The courtly and 'private' life of the Emperor: education, dynastic networks, commitments to representation, family life;
- Policy Challenges: Absolutism and 'Ausgleich', science and nationality conflicts
- Military and International Relations: the role of the Habsburg monarchy in the internationalism of the 19th century, the Universal Exhibition of 1873 and the internal political debates about the South Slav question, and the Radetzky-cult in Cisleithania

The GR is organized as a joint discussion. This requires a careful reading of the texts before the meeting.
