Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar looks at the history of rationalization processes in white collar work. Our analysis will include a critical reflection on the spatial, technological, and gender specific implications of this change. We will discuss in particular changes in the field of public administration and the organization of office work in private corporations, the role of new new technologies such as type writer, telephone, calculation machine, and computers. We will consider the period between the late 19th century and the 1980s.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in weekly meetings, presentation of a mid term paper, written paper at the end of term
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The seminar puts work organization in public administration and in private corporations in a historical perspective. This should cast light on the role of technologies, corporate culture, and established routines in the formation and transformation of our working environment. In methodological terms, the seminar will strengthen the competences in using a broad mix of sources - from text through architectonic maps to filmic representations of office work.
Examination topics
The seminar will approach these questions with an intensive debate of texts and other source materials in weekly meetings. It will be organized together with a seminar group from the university of applied arts. This should foster a dialogue across disciplines and provide input for the use of other, non textual representations for the presentation of the results of group work.
