070046 UE Guided Reading East European History - Baltic History in the 19th and 20th Centuries (2021S)

The aim of the course is to give an overview of some of the main issues of the history of the Baltic States during the 19th and 20th centuries. Each session focuses on broader themes such as power, nationalism, ethnic diversity, democracy, totalitarianism etc, and analyses them in the Baltic context.
By reading and discussing variety of primary sources and studies, students familiarise themselves with different methods in historical scholarship and improve their critical reading and analysing skills. Short presentation and discussion enables to practice public speaking and argumentation skills. Regular writing assignments will improve their writing skills.
The course will be digital. The course will be taught in English. Main texts assigned for reading are in English (1-3 articles or book chapters for each session).
