Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will discuss texts and sources on the following topics: the Atlantic world in modern history, international slave trade, why African slavery in the Americas?, modern racism and slavery, the economy of slavery, the legal status of slaves, slave masters, women and the family in slavery, slave culture, slave resistance and rebellion, images of slavery, slavery in films, the abolitionist movement, emancipation, life after slavery. Specific methods addressed in this course are text, discourse, image, and film analysis, and quantitative history.

Assessment and permitted materials

active participation in class-discussions, written papers on weekly assignments, a short oral presentation on one of the weekly assignments
