Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This Guided Reading course will look at the history of Austrian foreign policy towards the "Global South" since the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Our first focus will be on the place of the colonial question and on the spectrum from neo- to anti-imperialism in the political discourse of the First Republic and Austrofascism. In the main part of the course, we will then critically examine the specific positioning of "neutral" Austria vis-à-vis the so called "Third World" from independence in 1955 and until the end of bipolarity. The context of the Global Cold War and decolonization, as well as the rising importance of Tiermondism and the boom of development politics deserve special attention. Drawing on texts from primary and secondary literature, we will address questions such as: From when did the topic "Third World" emerge in the political and media discourse in Austria? Which actors, motivations, ideas and prejudices shaped the discourse and political practice of the respective epoch? What breaks and continuities in discourse and practice can be identified? What consequences did Austria's international positioning have on its relations with countries of the Global South, depending on the political context?

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements:
- Weekly assignments, due one day prior to the teaching session.

- At least one co-moderation or thematic presentation.
