Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar offers an introduction to the history of the railway in Europe with a focus on the Habsburg monarchy. In addition to the political and economic issues of concessions, route planning and their consequences for the development of economic regions, we will also approach railway from a cultural studies perspective. This includes the reassessment of space with the easier and faster crossing of distances, as well as contemporary experiences with this new technology that fueled fears as well as creating visions of a new world.
The seminar is discussion oriented. In seven sessions we will discuss the main topics of the seminar using literature provided via the Moodle platform. In order to convey a stronger connection to historical research, we will visit the State Archives, where we are particularly concerned with the archival material relating to the railway. In the remaining four sessions you will present the first results of your work. The themes of the work will be awarded at the beginning of the event. You are welcome to contribute your own topic suggestions.
