Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This proseminar will look in detail at the history of the Near East in the century before, during, and after the First Crusade. We will consider events primarily from an Eastern perspective, and students will be introduced to source material from the Greek, Syrian, Armenian, and Arabic traditions.
Assessment and permitted materials
The bulk of your grade (60%) will be based on two drafts of the final seminar paper, to be handed in respectively by 15 December and 30 January, as well as a presentation of your work in the class sessions of 9 and 16 January. You will also be expected to write five short (800-1200 word) reactions to the weekly reading, distributed roughly evenly over the semester, and to participate in class discussions on the themes.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
All written work will have a due date as advertised on Moodle, as well as a cutoff date for submission. Submissions between the due date and the cutoff will be marked to a maximum of 85% of the available points; submissions thereafter will not be accepted except by prior arrangement.
Examination topics
Reading list
Readings will be in Moodle.
