Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to teach the principles of academic working methods and the basic methods of historical research. The techniques taught include information and literature research, critical handling of secondary literature and sources, correct referencing and citation, archival research, working with databases, writing different types of texts and presenting academic work.
The general topic of this semester is "Another world is possible! Social Movements in Austria in the 19th and 20th Century". It provides the framework for readings, discussion homework and final assignments.
The course combines lectures by the course instructor with presentations by the students on individual topics, plenary discussions, text readings, different types of practical exercises and visits to selected archives and libraries (Library of Contemporary History, Vienna City Hall Library, Austrian State Archives, Austrian Media Library, Association for the History of the Labour Movement).
The aim of the course is to provide students with result-oriented research methods and practical experience in dealing with libraries, archives and databases. The course also aims to give students practice with different types of texts and to teach them how to critically engage with different sources.

Assessment and permitted materials

Im Laufe des Semesters müssen die Studierenden folgende Leistungen erbringen:
- Aktive Mitarbeit
- Lektüre auf Deutsch und Englisch
- Regelmäßige Hausübungen, darunter: Literaturrecherche und Herstellung einer Bibliographie; Thesenpapiere zu den gelesenen Texten; Formulierung einer Forschungsfrage; Buchrezension; Exposé; Tagungsbericht; Feedback über die Arbeit von Kolleg:innen
- Kurzreferat mit Powerpointpräsentation
- Abschlussarbeit im Umfang von 25.000 Zeichen

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Um die Lehrveranstaltung positiv abschließen zu können, müssen folgende Mindestanforderungen erfüllt werden:
- regelmäßige Teilnahme (ein unentschuldigtes Fehlen ist erlaubt)
- aktive Mitarbeit
- pünktliche Abgabe der Hausübungen
- mündliche Präsentation der geplanten Abschlussarbeit
- pünktliche Abgabe der Abschlussarbeit

Beurteilungsmaßstab: Aktive Mitarbeit und Präsentation (25%) ; Aufgaben während des Semesters (25%); Abschlussarbeit (50%)
