Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Historians estimated a sports history of the late Middle Ages and early modern history for a long time as non-existent. Sporting activities of the early modern nobility, the bourgeoisie, of working class people or students were hardly connected to the current Fordist model of individual achievement. Referring to Allen Guttmann, modern sport – starting in 1850ies – can be defined by secularization, equal opportunities in competition and its conditions, by specialization of functions, rationalization, bureaucratic organization and the constant pursuit for awards.
Many of these characteristics mentioned by Guttmann, however, are already visible in sport practices of the late Middle Ages or early modern times, e.g. concerning commercialization or professionalization. Starting from late medieval horse races, the series of lectures will deal with the early modern jeu de paume, shooting events in early modern cities, horse ridings / races, running, tennis and golf until the beginning of modern sports. Particularly, the course will deal with new body practices (such as swimming), which slowly diffused into broader societal layers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Die Leistungsbeurteilung erfolgt über eine schriftliche Prüfung. Es gibt insgesamt vier Termin: ein Termin am Ende des Wintersemesters, ein Termin am Beginn des Sommersemesters 2024 und dann zwei weitere Termin im Laufe des Sommersemesters.
