Aims, contents and method of the course

Within the framework of the thematic focus "Law and Society in Eastern Europe", the course offers an introduction to historical research methods and tools. Using various examples from different epochs, the course examines the effects and significance of law in the societies of Eastern Europe.

In particular, the following techniques will be learned and practiced:
- Researching historical literature
- Reading academic literature
- Researching and analyzing historical sources
- Formulating a historical research question
- Academic writing
- Presenting research results

These aspects will be practiced through regular readings, short written assignments with feedback, giving a short presentation, and writing a short final paper. In addition, we will visit libraries and archives, if possible in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
