070066 KU Reading Historiography (2013W)
The Indian Subcontinent from 1000 to the Present
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
The course will explore the different perspectives that modern historians have held on the history of South Asia from 1000 to the present. This time-frame was characterised first by the rise of Muslim states, then by colonialism, and subsequently by the efforts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to rise above their colonial heritage. The highly contested historiography of these successive periods will be approached through secondary literature. Some primary sources will also be read in order to understand how interpretations can diverge. A background in South Asian history is not necessary to participate in this course.
