Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The general topic for this course in Global History working skills will be Global Labour History, a field which has shown much vitality over the last years. It tries, on the one hand, to understand different forms of labour relations and their overlap (focusing not only on classical industrial ‘free wage labour’ but also on forms of unfree, informal, household etc. labour) and, on the other hand, the forms of resistance and mobilization by workers. Texts and discussions in class will cover topics such as classical labour history vs. Global Labour History; labour history archives and institutions; free and unfree labour; race, gender, class; transnational social mobilisations; etc.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be expected to engage in continuous work throughout the semester with weekly reading and writing assignments as well as in class presentations. At the middle of semester all course attendants will be obliged to hand in a written draft paper on one of the topics discussed during the course. This draft will then be read and feedbacked by a fellow student. Work in groups will be encouraged.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The idea of the course is to provide students with basic working skills needed for the research of a historical topic in a global framework. To this end, the course syllabus will offer participants the introduction into basic working skills and concrete research steps in global approach to historical topics, such as: search and critical assessment of secondary sources, ability to draft an abstract and bibliography for a research paper, proper usage of different citation styles, writing different sorts of texts, reflection and discussion of the writing process etc.
