Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course revisits the seventeenth-century crisis and seeks to introduce students to a comparative perspective on the long-lasting effects of profound societal changes that took place in the period. Focusing on a critical reading of recent scholarship that tackles various issues related to economic, religious, and demographic changes in the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman Empire in the seventeenth century, read in close conjunction with various contemporary primary texts, the course aims at transcending the traditional disciplinary boundaries by presenting to students and engaging them in an active transimperial discourse on the impact of the ”General Crisis”.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance and active involvement in discussions in class, based on the weekly assigned readings (primary sources and secondary literature), are essential. Students will be asked to formulate three questions that must encourage discussion in class. In addition, each student is expected to do one oral presentation in class on a selected primary source or secondary literature and submit three short critical essays (response papers, 1-2 pages max.), related to the main themes examined in the literature the course. Note: The instruction and course assignments will be in English. Students’ good command of English is expected.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade consists of the following components: - Regular attendance (max. two absences) and participation in discussions in class (20%)- Formulation of discussion questions (15%)- Oral presentation (20%)- Short written assignments (45%)

Examination topics
