Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Please note: This course starts on Tuesday 11 March 2025.

Historiography is the memory of history as a discipline. Addressing how scholars have narrated history across time means looking at the changing research questions they have asked, the sources and methods they have employed, and how historians have conceptualized and addressed historical processes. Moreover, it entails addressing how historians have influenced each other, how history as a discipline has been institutionalized and how, in turn, the institutionalization of history has impacted on the substance and form of the discipline. Indeed, studying the history of historiography means analyzing the making of history as a discipline and as a form of knowledge of the past.

Each class focuses on one strand in the historiography from the nineteenth century to the present, among others: historiographic positivism; historical materialism; the Annales School; social history; cultural history; postcolonial studies; global history; and the linguistic, spatial and archival “turns”.

The BA Seminar is primarily held in English (but students can also choose to speak in German). The mandatory readings and the historiographical papers will be in English and/or German.

Assessment and permitted materials

The BA Seminar centres on two aspects:
• Reading and discussing “classic” and less renown historiographical texts (in English and/or German), with a view to analyze how the historiographical discourse has shifted across time, and what has inspired such change.
• Writing one paper in which each student reflects on a specific moment and focus in the history of historiography.

The two aspects are brought together during the classes: (plenary and group) discussions about historiographical texts accompany the students in the definition, structuring and refinement of their own papers; in turn, working on the papers brings up concrete insights on the themes and approaches of the historiographical texts.

Besides expanding their knowledge on the history of historiography and reflecting on its relevance, the participants will improve their skills in the analysis of scholarly texts and in the structuring and writing of academic papers.

The classes will include:
 Plenary and group discussions on the assigned readings
 Plenary and group discussions on, and oral presentations of (aspects) of the paper-in-progress
 Comments and discussions on the (drafts of the) historiographical papers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Read the assigned texts (mandatory) – 30%
• Participate actively in classroom discussions – 30%
• Final historiographical paper – 40%
