Aims, contents and method of the course

Topics: Gender history of the 19th and 20th century with a focus on discourses about science and technologies. Work and labour history. Gender studies and science and technology studies.
The aims of the course are to gain the following skills: Awareness of the gendered nature of science and technologies. Critical reading of scholarship on gender, science and technologies. Application of methods to analyze primary sources. Research of primary sources and posing research questions based on these sources. Independent research in preparation for future seminar papers.
Methods: Input through reading and discussion of provided literature. Development of research questions individually and in groups. Permanent discussion and feedback on the development of research questions, possible primary sources and historiographic methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in online forums. Written exercises and online presentation. Final paper with 10-15 pages. Papers can be submitted in English or German!

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade will be composed as follows:

50% seminar paper
25% other written exercises (essay, research question, proposal)
25% forum contributions (presentation of your research and discussion of the others’)
Each part must be fulfilled sufficiently.

The seminar paper must contain the following aspects: gender as a main category of analysis; use of primary sources; critical discussion of terms and scholarship.

It will be possible to get feedback on the papers before the deadline.

Seminar paper as well as written contributions.
