Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will introduce students to the history of the Habsburg Empire c. 1815-1918, taking a broad range of aspects into account, which include political, legal, cultural, economic, social, and gender history. We will discuss book chapters, research articles, and primary sources on topics ranging from the Metternich years, the revolutions of 1848/49, and the Compromise with Hungary to constitutionalism, nation-building and nationalism, parliamentarism and the development of mass political parties, women’s movements, minorities (in particular the Jewish population), economic and demographic developments, social policies, fin-de siècle culture, and finally World War I and the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy. One session will include a visit to the Wien Museum, the museum on Vienna's history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be assessed on the basis of short written assignments, a presentation, and their contribution to discussion.
A very good reading knowledge of English is required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

requirements for passing the class:
- 8 written assignments (usually about 500 words each) (70 % of the final grade)
- 1 oral presentation, together with a fellow student, on a primary source or an object shown at the Wien Museum (15 % of the final grade)
- active participation in discussion (15 % of the final grade)
- regular attendance (students may miss up to two classes)
