The BA-seminar deals with what is known in German musical historiography as “Wiener Klassik” (Viennese Classical Music) and its key period between ca. 1780 and 1830. We will deal with the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and, depending on the students proposals, lesser known and popular composers and their works.
The late 18th century was also an age of very dynamic social changes. Vienna grew rapidly to be one of the most populous European metropoles and centers of culture. The rising bourgeoisie and educated public were seeking after cultural and musical enlightenment and entertainment. The most gifted and famous composers of the time used these preconditions to emancipate themselves from the royal court and the aristocracy, which had so far dominated their lives and careers. The seminar will also cover the tumultuous period of the Napoleonic Wars, when musical life continued to blossom against all odds, and the early Biedermeier period, when romanticism changed the philosophy and practice of music.
Students may choose from a wide array of topics, the lives of composers, single works and productions, and their public reception. You may also focus on social and cultural preconditions, the growth of metropolitan Vienna, new places where music was performed, or specific social groups and actors, who supported the production and performance of music, or simply sought after entertainment.
Please develop before the start of the semester ideas on topics you would like to write about, and bring brief research proposals already to the first session of the seminar. It would be good if you can read music.
