Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Since its foundation in 1920, the League of Nations was not only an intergovernmental organization with a comprehensive claim in the fields of disarmament and peacekeeping, but also the organization that carried on humanitarian, economic and technical cooperation at the intergovernmental level. Lastly, the League of Nations was also a civil society project, which materialized in the League of Nations leagues of the individual states. The seminar will deal with the conceptions of and expectations towards the League of Nations, look at its form of organization and trace the significance of the League of Nations for the successor states of the Habsburg Monarchy on the basis of some selected policy fields (disarmament, state finances, mobility, minorities, trafficking in girls, health care, science).
In this seminar, the discussion of current research literature is closely linked to the work in the League of Nations Archive, which is accessible online.

Assessment and permitted materials

Successful completion of the seminar requires the following:
1) an active participation during the seminar before. This requires
a) the reading of the preparatory literature, which may be reviewed through short essays
b) participation in the discussion of the texts in order to develop the seminar topic of the respective lesson
c) participation in group work to develop the topic of the individual lesson based on research in the League of Nations Archives.

2) the presentation/discussion of one's own BA thesis in the seminar, whereby it may be necessary, due to time constraints, for a short video of the presentations to be posted on Moodle

3) a BA thesis of approx. 65,000 characters, (± 5%), including spaces, footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, excluding graphics (= approx. 17 manuscript pages, 1½ lines, 12pkt.).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- active participation and compulsory attendance
- the presentation of the BA thesis -- either in the form of a short video or in the seminar.
- timely submission of the BA thesis: to ensure good academic practice, you might be invited to a grade-relevant interview after submission of the BA thesis. This interview must be completed positively.

Grading standard:
All written (partial) performances to be uploaded on Moodle will be checked with the plagiarism software turnitin. Performance assessment will be based on the following weighting:

- Discussion participation including group work and various forms of feedback to other participants (constructive, technically correct contributions and engagement in discussing the presentations): 25 points.
- Oral presentation including handout: 15 points
- Bachelor thesis: 60 points (agreed deadline must be met)

For a positive evaluation of the course 60 points are required, the bachelor thesis must be positive (one time possibility for improvement in case of negative result):
1. (very good) 100-90 points
2. (good) 89-81 points
3. (satisfactory) 80-71 points
4. (sufficient) 70-60 points
5. (insufficient) 59-0 points
