Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course offers an introduction to the history of photography in various parts of the world (Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, North and South America). It will also introduce individual photographers and their global activities, e.g. Leni Riefenstahl in Africa or early African or African-American photographers in West Africa and Brazil. It will draw on and expand the concept of an "Atlantic visualscape" (Schneider) which challenges the hegemonic visions of the colonizing camera. Students will have the opportunity to practice some of the methodological questions raised by actively engaging with photographic documents.
