Vienna is a global city in many ways. This course and excursion will focus on one connection of the city of Vienna to the world: the Danube River. First of all the Danube River is the worlds most international waterway and an important route for traffic and transport within Europe and beyond. Furthermore the Danube River is in several aspects of international and global relevance for a global Vienna: It is a tourist attraction as well as a part of city-marketing in global competition for tourists. It is the key element of the Waterfront urban planning strategies, following a worldwide phenomena of urban development along bodies of water. And it attracts international investments in real estate and office space (e.g The Danube City, Marina Towers).
