Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course will consist of introductory talks by the lecturer on writing techniques and specific themes of British Empire History. Students are expected to complete weekly written assignments on specific English texts and to give an oral presentation on a chosen theme of British Empire history before, finally, handing in a written paper. Students are expected to research their topic, take part in discussions, provide an oral presentation on a specific topic and complete written work. This consists of weekly assignments AND a final paper on a chosen theme. It is strongly recommended that students consult their lecturer about the progress of their written final paper during consultation hours (Sprechstunde). Weekly assignments will be based on a reading of What is History by E.H. Carr (available in Facultas Buchhandlung Altes AKH).
Assessment and permitted materials
Final marks will be awarded on the basis of attendance, the willingness to join in discussions, the quality of the oral presentation and the written work (weekly assignments and final paper) according to the key: 10/10/20/60%. If a student cannot attend, he/she should inform the lecturer as far in advance as possible and by means of e-mail. The written paper must be at least 15 pages long (excluding title page and bibliography), written at 1,5 spacing. Preferably, written papers should be sent as an e-mail attachment to the lecturer by foreign students ONLY; Austrian students should hand in their final written paper at the desk of the Institut für Geschichte.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This exercise-course should acquaint the students, firstly, with key developments in the history of the British Empire, and, secondly, with discussion in the English language about key questions in historiography.
Examination topics
The lecturer will use images and text in the introductory sessions. Students should speak slowly and distinctly in debate and when giving an oral presentation, and regard the exercise-course as an opportunity to acquaint themselves, firstly, with key debates in historiography as described by E.H. Carr. or his critics, and, secondly, on specific themes in the history of the British Empire.
