Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers an exemplary introduction to scientific work in historical science on the topic of "democracy". The development of historical questions, getting to know different types of scientific texts, systematic scientific research, dealing with historical sources, including basic knowledge of archives and historical forms of writing, as well as the development of the basic ability to write and present a historical scientific paper are at the centre of this course.

Assessment and permitted materials

The performance assessment is based on the following components:

- Active participation
- regular written assignments
- oral presentation of the term paper
- Term paper of approx. 25,000 characters (with spaces, approx. 9 manuscript pages, 1½ lines, 12 pt., including footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, without graphics).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
Compulsory attendance. If two sessions are missed, a written compensation assignment is due; if three sessions are missed, the course cannot be completed positively. All partial performances must be completed on time and in full.

Grading scale:
40% active participation & regular written assignments
40% term paper
20% presentation of the term paper in the course incl. handout
Each part of the course must be completed and graded at least adequately in order to successfully complete the course.

Examination topics

This is an exam-immanent course. Therefore, all performances refer to the contents of the course provided in Moodle.

Reading list

The most important basis of this course is the e-learning offer History Online: https://gonline.univie.ac.at/

On didactics:
Neumann, Friederike: Schreiben im Geschichtsstudium. Opladen/Toronto: Barbara Budrich/UTB 4843, 2018, https://www-utb-studi-e-book-de.uaccess.univie.ac.at/schreiben-im-geschichtsstudium.html

On the topic:
Hans Vorländer, Democracy. Geschichte, Formen, Theorien, 3rd, revised edition, Munich 2019 (= C.H. Beck Wissen 2311).
Bernard Crick, Democracy. A Very Short Introduction, Oxford 2002 (= Very Short Introductions).

As the titles make clear, these are 'only' first introductions, but they are nevertheless highly recommended. More comprehensive literature references will then be provided in the Moodle course.
