Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture deals with Austrian history between the Congress of Vienna and the beginning of the Second Republic. The focus will be on the development of state, politics and society. This focus is due to the central role of the developments of statehood for the historical and historiographical analysis of the Habsburg monarchy and its failure. The lecture sets new research on the history of state, politics and administration in dialogue with Austrian history. Was the Habsburg Monarchy as a multi-ethnic state disadvantaged in comparison to the European states that understood it as a nation-state? How did the expansion of statehood and political integration occur in the monarchy and in other European states? How did the successor states cope with the challenge of asserting themselves in a completely new political and international field?
