Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an overview of Chinese history between the 7th and the 19th centuries. Imperial China will be addressed specifically as part of broader Eurasian and global dynamics. By looking at people, goods, ideas and their circulation within
and across the borders of the Chinese realm, the course will examine the forces that shaped the history of this region between the middle ages and early modernity.

The course is arranged chronologically following the dynastic sequence of Chinese imperial history. Each dynasty will be analysed for the duration of two sessions: one session looking at China’s interaction with other macro-regions of Eurasia and the world during that specific dynasty, and one session looking at particular aspects of the Chinese state, culture and society during that same period.

In each session, topics treated will show how Chinese history was entangled with broader Eurasian developments up to the time of modern global connections. This arrangement of the course has the purpose of providing a chronological
overview of the events which shaped imperial China, while testing varying scales of time and space serving the understanding of this period of Chinese history in global perspective.
