The Transylvanian Plateau is a region that was subject to a variety of political influences. The Hungarian kings settled the ‘hospites teutonici’ from the Moselle region, the Szeklers and even the Teutonic Order for a short time. Towns developed against the background of mining. Vienna had close ties with Transylvania, as is clearly demonstrated by the priest of St Stephen's Church in Vienna, Gerhard von Siebenbürgen (ca. 1210-1271), the ‘Viennese’ painter Hans Siebenbürger (1440-1483), the Sibiu-born Viennese mayor Martin Siebenbürger (1475-executed in 1522) and the early 15th century view of Vienna in Mediaș. From the late Middle Ages onwards, the ‘Saxons’ built fortified fortified churches to protect the population from attacks by Ottomans, Habsburg troops or even the Kurucs, even after 1526, when Transylvania became a contested and struggling ‘swing state’. The Leopoldinum of 1691 and the Peace of Karlowac in 1699 placed the country under the control of the Habsburg Monarchy. The secret Protestants (Landler) deported from the Austrian lands were settled in multi-confessional Transylvania from the 1730s onwards. The knowledgeable administrator and freemason Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803), chairman of the Transylvanian Court Chancellery in Vienna, held office as governor in Sibiu from 1777 and made an outstanding contribution to the reform of the sparsely populated region. Above all, the First World War (Battle of Sibiu in 1916) and the Treaty of Triano (Declaration of Union of Mediaș) reshuffled the cards between Hungary, the Transylvanian Saxons and the Romanians in what was now Romanian Transylvania. The war and the subsequent deportations of the Transylvanian Saxons and Landler, as well as the 1989 revolution and the exodus that began in 1990, were also turning points.Procedure:
