Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course prepares students for the Master's thesis by giving them the skills to write a realisable proposal/exposé for a Master's thesis. Due to the course instructor's research focus, the topics should primarily be in the field of (early) modern history (ca. 1450-1850).The following aspects will play a role in the course: Narrowing down a topic, developing a research question, constituting a corpus of sources, analysing the state of research, drafting a research design that relates the research question, sources and methods to each other in a meaningful way. Depending on the thematic composition of the group, texts on theories and methods relevant to the practical elaboration of the topics are also read. From a methodological point of view, the course focuses on the joint development of the requirements for a successful proposal/exposé and its subsequent practical implementation with regard to the students' own research projects, whereby the written implementation experiences are in turn jointly reflected upon. Various forms of peer feedback are also used.
