Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is an introduction to the history of pseudoscience. In the first part, various positions within historiography will be discussed: Where does the line between pseudoscience and real science run historically - and is it even possible to draw such a line? In the second part, important stages in the history of pseudoscience are analyzed on the basis of source texts.
In the course of the seminar, students will develop the competence to deal with the original texts and the research literature on the history of pseudoscience in a critical and historically reflective manner. Using guided individual and group research, students will contribute their existing knowledge of analyzing written and non-written sources to the discussion. The presentation of their research also offers the opportunity to apply the methodological knowledge acquired in the course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation and presentation of five seminar-related assignments. Attendance of the VO Schwerpunktinführung Wissenschaftsgeschichte is recommended.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular and active participation in the course. The minimum requirement for a positive assessment is thorough reading of the texts, some of which are extensive, and active participation in the discussion; completion of the written assignments mentioned; and participation in small, non-graded exercises. Attendance is compulsory. Absence for important reasons is permitted in exceptional cases, but please notify us in advance by email.
