Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to provide basic knowledge about the structure and function of (historical) academic texts and to develop basic skills for understanding and using such texts. Alongside sources, historiographical texts are the second type of 'material' that historians work with (although historiographical texts can also be sources). What both types of 'material' have in common is that they are comparatively inaccessible and do not (or cannot) be understood by themselves, so prospective historians must learn to understand them using a methodological approach. After an introduction to academic reading and writing, the development of historical science from its ancient roots to the present day is traced in a diachronic approach using the example of the history of democracy. Participants develop (or deepen) their ability to recognise, historicise and criticise questions, historical images and historical narratives using a topic that is essential for political education.
