Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the context of this course, students will deal with fascism, National Socialism and right-wing extremism both from a historical-theoretical as well as a subject-specific didactical perspective. In doing so, the subject area “History, Social Studies and Civic Education” will be considered as a whole: Interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches are an integral part of the course.During the first phase, we will clarify terms, compare different definitions and approaches, and discuss ideological elements and historical developments of fascism, National Socialism and right-wing extremism. Students will discuss characteristics and modern articulations of the extreme right and conduct case studies. During the second phase, students will develop subject-specific didactical ideas on how to teach specific aspects of fascism, National Socialism and right-wing extremism. In addition to didactic principles and the promotion of historical-political competencies, a special focus will be placed on holocaust education (especially in relation to digital games). Places of extracurricular learning will be addressed. Students will critically reflect on challenging situations and potential pitfalls that may arise when dealing with fascism, National Socialism and right-wing extremism. Based on these considerations, students will then design and present their own lesson plans and offer them for critical plenary discussion. They will then write a final paper in which they deal with selected aspects of the subject in a scientifically and didactically sound manner and revise their previous lesson plans.
