Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The FS deals with the origins and history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church ("UGCC"), which belongs to Rome, and spans the period from the early modern period to the present day. Subject to the jurisdiction and structures of the Roman Catholic Church, the Greek Catholic - now Ukrainian Catholic - Church retained the Byzantine rite in its liturgy. Favoured by the Polish-Lithuanian state for politically pragmatic reasons, it received little support from the faithful in the Ruthenian-Belarusian territories at times and was more of a project initiated from 'above' until the partitions of Poland. It was not until the end of the 18th century that this denomination took root in the Habsburg territory as the "Ruthenian" church, while it was dissolved by the Tsarist Empire. Between prohibition, underground church and promoted for political reasons, it had to be reorganised in the interwar period, after the Second World War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. A selection of keywords: Church Union - Uniate Church - Ukrainian National Movement - Basilian Order - UGKK
