Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course analyses various source types from analogue and digital archives. Having its thematic focus on the history of migration, it explores ego-texts, images and films that document the processes and types of migration and the contacts of diasporic groups to their host environments and their original “homelands.” Next to a training in source criticism, the course offers methods for the analysis of ego-documents (especially autobiographical material and biographies), as well as visual material (image and films).

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the discussions;
small written assignments on selected methods;
short presentation;
Final essay about individual research on a selected source, with the application of one of the methods introduced in the course (length of approx. 25,000 characters (with spaces, approx. 9 manuscript pages, 1½ space, 12 pt., including footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, without illustration).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

good English reading skills;
regulary attendance (maximum 2 x unexcused absences), in contrary case extra assignments are due;
presentations;
submission of the final essay on time

Examination topics

Regelmäßige Lektüre zur Vorbereitung der Präsenzsitzungen
Rechercheaufgaben, mittels derer sich die Studierenden mit den Orten und dem Auffinden von Quellen vertraut machen
Verfassen mehrerer exemplarischer Quelleninterpretationen (zu qualitativen, quantitativen, analogen, digitalen und materiellen Quellen)
Schriftliche Reflexion über Methoden anhand von Kurzzusammenfassungen zu Texten, die Methoden kritisch diskutieren
Abschlussarbeit mittleren Umfangs, in deren Rahmen eine selbständig recherchierte Quelle mittels einer oder mehrerer explizit gemachter Methoden analysiert wird.
