Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD BILINGUAL (GERMAN AND ENGLISH)
Nothing is more specific to the urban lifestyle than shopping and eating. Considering that most people in history have never bought their food, the urban landscape has a remarkably different social context than any other in the matter of procuring the daily bread.
To understand the food history of a city, in this case, Vienna, it is important to get an idea of the history of the city itself and to connect it with questions about the peculiarities of the urban food supply in town.
Apart from barely available documents on market regulations, reliable written sources in this area have only been available since the early 19th century. At that time, a uniform tax system, the so-called consumption tax, was introduced in Vienna. The same applies to other, more informal sources such as cookbooks and menus of restaurants and prestigious hotels. However, the development of urban markets, ports and the supply of food to the city folks can be reconstructed. Research questions of this kind will be discussed in the first part of this course, followed by visits to hot spots of the Vienna food supply.

Assessment and permitted materials

This is a course that requires personal engagement and a good level of commitment to the team.
Teamwork and presentations at the places selected by the participants for the excursion days determine the individual grading. Cf.: Minimum requirements and assessment standard.
The lecturer will be happy to answer your questions one hour after each lesson. Registration is useful to reduce waiting times.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The format of the excursion course requires that all participants without exception take part in the four days of the four-hour course units. This fact needs to be taken into account when it comes to the individual semester planning.
Engaged participation in the class activities (50% percent) plus assignments (50%) with a reasonable workload according to 4 ECTS. Mutual reliability is essential for the teamwork process of this course.

Examination topics

No specific exam applies to this kind of course. Nevertheless, students will have to provide well prepared, resources based presentations on the sites that we will be visiting.
The individual commitment of each member of a team cannot be graded by the professor only. Therefore, a self-reflective process of collective grading of individual performances will be applied. Further information on this procedure will be explained in class.
