Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The definition of what is actually "Jewish" in terms of places, objects, works of art, texts etc. deals with cultural-historical research as well as its application in museums and memorial sites. On the basis of selected locations, the excursion is devoted to the question of what makes a place a "Jewish" place or an object there or presented to a "Jewish" object. With concepts and methods of cultural studies, especially of cultural transfer, definitions and criteria of this category "Jewish" are discussed in their respective contexts. In the introduction, theoretical and methodological texts are read and discussed.
The theoretical approaches are applied concretely by visiting selected places in Vienna and Lower Austria - synagogues, cemeteries, museums, memorials. In these places, the participants select concrete objects that present aspects of the multifaceted dimensions of "Jewish" in short presentations and are elaborate them in more detail in a written paper (5 pages). Practical goals are handy, short presentations at unusual types of places and the writing of a written work according to good scientific practice. In a final meeting, the results will be discussed and mutual feedback will be given.
